General Dance is predominantly a practical course, rather than theoretical, meaning that most classes are physical dance classes. This course has no external SCSA examination at the end of Year 12 and is intended for students who wish to explore choreographic processes and learn about the entertainment potential of dance and choreography. General Dance is structured in such a way to accommodate both experienced dancers and those that are at the beginning of their dance journey. Students will develop their dance technique and present structured choreographic works for performance. They will gain understanding of movement and experience a variety of dance styles such as jazz, contemporary, ballet, tap and Broadway musical choreography.

  • The course consists of 70% practical work 30% written work
  • Syllabus and other SCSA documentation can be found HERE

Dance General at Mercedes College is an amazing course and subject to take part in. It is a great opportunity for exercise and to get moving to take a break from any theory work. What I love most about dance is having fun with other students and the teacher while expressing yourself through movement. This class is the highlight of my day, having a fun, safe place, creating dance routines without being judged. Even though my dance ability is not the best, the whole class is so inclusive and respectful of everyone for their own talent. I definitely recommend dance, you will not regret it, and I’m sure it will be your favourite subject. Pick DANCE!! Stephanie Botega – Year 11 Dancer.

Dance at Mercedes is great because it is a chance to escape the traditional classroom and release stress. I’m not a very technical dancer and just know if you are the same as me don’t get discouraged as people of all backgrounds can dance and excel! With the anxiety of exams and school, I find myself looking forward to dance and is the highlight of my day! It takes my mind off things and is a great way to learn all styles of dance in an incredibly supportive and encouraging environment. Ela Kowalczyk – Year 11 Dancer.

I would recommend dance general because it is such a fun and exciting class to go to every day. Everyone is at different levels, you don’t have to be a dancer to be successful in this class. There is written work too, but it isn’t overwhelming or takes up a lot of time at home if you need to study. We do a range of styles and get to express our ideas or viewpoint in dance, it’s a great class to have fun with your friends and just dance which is fun in itself! Grace Wilson-Clark – Year 11 Dancer.

Dance at Mercedes is great because it is a free environment to express yourself through dancing, no matter your skill level. You could be a beginner or have been doing dance your whole life and you will still feel like a pro dancer. My favourite thing about dance at Mercedes is collaborative work, which there is a lot of. You can share all your ideas without judgement and construct something amazing with people you love. Chloe Cormack – Year 11 Dancer
