The English General course focuses on consolidating and refining the skills and knowledge needed by students to become competent, confident and engaged users of English in everyday, community, social, further education, training and workplace contexts. The course is designed to provide students with the skills to succeed in a wide range of post-secondary pathways by developing their language, literacy and literary skills. Students comprehend, analyse, interpret, evaluate and create analytical, imaginative, interpretive and persuasive texts in a range of written, oral, multimodal and digital forms. This course is organised into a Year 11 syllabus and a Year 12 syllabus. The cognitive complexity of the syllabus content increases from Year 11 to Year 12.

General English has helped me to improve my English in so many ways. My overall communication skills have been developed by using a range of texts including novels, plays, autobiographies, films and feature articles. My favourite part of this course is that the texts are incredibly interesting, and relatable. These texts are from a variety of genres and aid us in creating our own texts so that we will be ready for the pathway we choose – university, TAFE or traineeships. Niamh Wilson
